While the warm weather that’s now settling over Calgary is certainly welcome after several months of frigid, freezing temperatures, not all aspects of the melting snow are good. You’ve undoubtedly noticed a build-up of snow, slush, mud, dirt, and salt on your car – especially with the record-breaking dumps of snow we’ve gotten already in 2018 – and all of the grit, moisture, and corrosive minerals that coat your car’s components can spell big trouble down the road. But you probably already knew all of that. What you might not be aware of is the effect that de-icing agents have on your vehicle as well.
Different from just salt and gravel, de-icing agents are preventative solutions that are applied to road surfaces around the city in anticipation of snowy conditions. While this is a great idea for keeping your tires from slipping, it’s not so good for the metal that makes up your chassis and panels! In Calgary, the solution is composed of calcium chloride, and snow and ice stand little chance of resisting it…but neither does your car’s finish, especially in the spring. As the molecules from the salts dissolve into the meltwater, and the temperatures get warmer and more reaction-friendly, it makes rust nearly impossible to avoid and very quick to take hold. You can have hundreds of dollars’ worth of damage after a single year, and noticeable structural and panel rusting after just a few more.
And just in case you’re tempted to think that it’s only exposed metal that you need to worry about – the same chemical processes that wreak havoc with rust can break their way through factory clearcoats as well! As the salt reacts with environmental water over time, it creates a mild acidic effect that will eventually discolor, fade, and destroy a regular clearcoat. And once that happens, it’s not long before the metal beneath falls victim, too.
If you’re serious about preventing rust on your vehicle, then having a strong layer between the salty water outside and the metal down beneath your paint is the best way to do that. Luckily, at SR International, we carry a full selection of car protection coatings and vehicle films that offer superior protection across the body of your car or truck! Different than a simple wax, these coatings are molecularly bonded to your finish at a microscopic level, filling in the gaps that would otherwise allow harmful water and ions in. Having one of these Titanium or Ceramic treatments done can not only save you money on rusting, fading, and discoloration down the road, but it will help your paint keep its shine, protect from chips and scratches, and defend against the onslaught of natural debris, like bird or tree droppings, that every vehicle faces in its lifetime. And the best part? They need no maintenance, they are easy to clean, and they cannot be removed by simply washing the car, like wax. All of this adds up to one of the most effective rust-prevention treatments out there!

It’s November and Calgary has had its first blast of icy winter weather. While the blowing snow, fog, early darkness, and slippery roads are all parts of winter driving that we have to deal with, many people overlook another aspect that can cause just as much damage over the long term.
When your vehicle comes off the assembly line, the paint has a factory sealant on it that is there to protect against the elements – and in turn, against rust and corrosion. In Canada’s harsh weather conditions – constant warming and cooling, wet, heavy snowfalls, massive hailstorms – this coating fades quickly, and is often not enough to really do the job that it needs to do. Add in the fact that our city’s streets get a liberal coating of salt and gravel to help de-ice them all winter long, and that we wash our cars less because it’s cold outside – now you’ve got a perfect recipe for a failing paint job, which not only look bad, but can mean costly repairs when sections rust away or corrode underneath.
So what can be done about this?
Many places will claim that wax or a simple paint sealant are enough – but that’s what came out of the factory, and they just don’t stand up to the weather or acidic debris like bird waste or tree sap. It’s not enough to keep your car protected down to the metal over the long haul. That’s why we at SR International in Calgary use the expertly-developed CS-II specialized paint coating.
Not just a flimsy film, our incredible CS-II Paint Protection Coating uses a superior no-wax, no-paste formula that is specifically designed to work with all finishes and varnishes. It uses a combination of polymers and resin to create a thick and durable, yet incredibly tough, layer of protection on all exterior paint surfaces, including alloys. It allows your paint to flex with the temperature, and best of all, it requires no maintenance other than regular washing. This coating will not be removed through washing or with chemical cleaners – it’s a lot tougher than that! Only machine polishing will remove it once it has cured.
If you’re still not convinced that will be enough to protect your vehicle – like if you do lots of driving in areas with loose gravel or truck traffic – then take a look at our Paint Protection Film. It’s the most effective method of keeping your vehicle chip- and scratch-free while you’re on the road. Applied to heavily-hit areas like the hood, fenders, mirrors, and pillars, the thermoplastic urethane film has memory cells built in that transfer impact energy over a wider area, meaning that rocks, bugs, and other debris will have far less ability to ruin your paint and shine. It even has a self-healing quality that allows light scratches and abrasions to “heal” out of the film when heat is applied. It also improves your vehicle’s resale value by keeping the front end in great condition for much longer.
We use Suntek Paint Protection Film (though we will use 3M if you would prefer), as Suntek has superior optical clarity, ease of installation and warranty. When this film is installed, your car will look like it just rolled out of the showroom for a long time to come!
